Kurten is a small town of about 400 people (395 at the 2020 census), roughly ten miles northeast of Bryan where Highway 21, US 190, and FM 2038 meet. It was settled by German immigrants in the 1860s, incorporated in 2000, and is mostly owner-occupied country homes on acreage.

The ground

Kurten is in the Post Oak Savannah, with sandy soils over a clay subsoil under post oak woods, so trees, roots, and a clay layer a short way down shape most outdoor work.

Homes and lots

Country homes on three to five acres and larger tracts along FM 2038 and Highway 21, with very few small town lots.

Good to know

Kurten has its own zoning ordinance, and construction inside city limits needs a Land Use Permit through the Town Clerk’s office; septic systems are permitted through the Brazos County Health District.

SERVICES IN KURTEN

Everything we do in Kurten.

LAWN & LANDSCAPE CARE

Kurten lots are mostly several acres, so lawn care here means larger mowing areas, tree lines, and pasture edges rather than a small fenced yard.

OUTDOOR IMPROVEMENTS

Post oak woods come right up to many Kurten homes, so landscaping is usually about clearing and shaping a yard out of the trees rather than filling an empty lot.

SITE & PROPERTY WORK

Brush clearing, driveway and culvert work, and pad sites for shops are common on Kurten acreage, all planned around the septic system on the property.

PAVERS & HARDSCAPE

Sandy topsoil over clay means a patio that looks firm at the surface can still move, so the base is dug through the loose layer before anything is laid.

OUTDOOR LIVING

With acreage and shade from mature oaks, Kurten outdoor living spaces are often large covered patios set to look out over the property.

OUTDOOR STRUCTURES

Shops, barns, and pavilions are a big part of building on Kurten acreage, and inside city limits they need to fit the town’s zoning and Land Use Permit process.

TURF, FENCES & COURTS

Fencing around Kurten is usually perimeter, pasture, or entry fencing across acreage, laid out around gates, tree lines, and livestock rather than a small backyard.
